Uncomfortable with Butterfly

Ok, this is a serious and important issue, though I do run the risk of sailing too close to the ToS of the forum. If the mods feel this post and the thread is not appropriate, then please do remove it.

In the near future, there is a drama on TV to be shown called “Butterfly”. I have seen the extracts advertising it and have to say I feel most uncomfortable with it. I would like to hear the opinions of others, especially those who have, or wish to, reassign their genders.

It is my opinion that at the child’s age it is too young for him to have these feelings unless outside influences have been involved. Am I wrong in having this view? I also worry that the drama might be looked forwards to and watched by… shall we say, a minority who have less than healthy reasons. Am I alone with that concern?

I await replies with interest.

I thought the same thing myself to be honest but at the same time I feel that it is good to showcase issues like this as long as the showmakers get across the facts about this issue as well as drama

Provided people think about their replies I see no reason why this subject should not be discussed here.

I think it's important to note that gender and sexuality aren't the same thing. It looks like the writers have been very careful to make it clear this is about gender

If you don't try it how do you know you don't like it?

Mrs D watched this so did catch some of it. Really doesn't deal with anything sexual so no need to be uncomfortable

However I don't think it's great, or doing a service to anyone trying to come to terms with their gender

Yes there's a young (physical) boy who feels strongly about being female, but they've muddied the water with the parents relationships where the child desperately wants them to be back together, going so far as to slit their wrist to stop the mum going on a date

So the whole trans aspect is confused by the mental health issues caused by the marriage break up

Don't think that was a good call

If you don't try it how do you know you don't like it?

Watched some of episode 2. The tone is still all wrong in my opinion. Yes it shows how tough it is for young trans people but it's still hooked into the parents marriage breakdown, and also now she's been befriended at school by a girl suffering from anorexia. Which, even if unintentionally, will cause some viewers to equate gender dismorphia with a disease that is undesirable and curable

Poor

Was forced to watch most of the end of this. What a load of rubbish. There's no way that drama has helped the cause of young trans people. It's more likely to harm them because it focused on the damage caused to the parents. Until the last 5 mins when suddenly everything was OK
